Extreme heat and raging wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

This situation come after this month's bushfires in another state, which caused the loss of homes and loss of life. Intense heatwave warnings have additionally been activated for later this week in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and relentless heat presents a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into darkness last week after strong gusts compromised the city’s power grid, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to significant transport delays at a key airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is expected to cause further problems as service providers scramble to restore power to more than 1 million residents.

Atypical Fog Covers Typically Clear Region

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its clear skies and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lingers for only a few days, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The extended fog has been fuelled by exceptional autumn precipitation that left the ground waterlogged.

Storm Brings Snow to Tourist Destination

And in Spain, a weather system has brought heavy rainfall, powerful winds and even snowfall to a set of islands – conditions many would not connect with this favored holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unknown at higher ground, the storm brought some of the deepest snow depths since 2016 to a national park, forcing its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, strong winds from the north buffeted the archipelago, with gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple locations. The influence of the weather event is expected to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
