Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
