The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Team
The English team has chosen a twelve-player selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted five past matches.
During these matches, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the lower order.
But McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
