Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.
A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.
