The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a substantial range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
