Research Shows UK Ministers Met Fossil Fuel Industry Representatives In 500 Sessions During First Year of Power

According to new research, cabinet members met with agents of the oil and gas sector more than 500 times during their opening year in government – amounting to double per business day.

Notable Rise Compared to Previous Administration

The study revealed that petroleum sector advocates were in attendance at 48% additional ministerial meetings during the current government's initial year versus the year before.

Official Response

The government defended the meetings, claiming that officials conducted discussions with a wide range of representatives from "energy sector, labor organizations and community groups to propel our clean energy superpower mission".

Increasing Apprehensions About Industry Influence

However, the discoveries have caused alarm among critics about the extent of the fossil fuel industry's sway over government at a moment when officials are working to decrease expenses and move to a greener energy infrastructure.

Key Findings

The study, which draws from the government's released data of official engagements, also found:

  • Ministers at the Net Zero Ministry met with fossil fuel lobbyists 274 times, with corporate delegates participating in approximately one-fourth of sessions.

  • The climate official held discussions with oil industry representatives 250 times – with one-third of all his meetings including corporate delegates.

  • During the identical timeframe ministry officials engaged with trade union representatives 61 times.

  • Several leading fossil fuel companies held discussions with ministers 100 times between them.

  • Fossil fuel lobbyists were present at the majority of government meeting about the windfall tax, a temporary levy against the "exceptional earnings" of North Sea energy corporations.

Political Reactions

An environmental politician commented: "Rather than considering scientists, populations affected by environmental disasters, or parents eager to guarantee a safe future for their children and grandchildren, this government is emphasizing lobbyists and profits for large energy corporations."

Ministerial Response

Ministers insisted the findings were "deceptive", stating many of the firms included also had clean energy investments and that such matters were typically the primary subject of the meetings.

"Our main focus is a fair, systematic and thriving shift in the offshore region in compliance with our ecological and statutory obligations, and we are cooperating with the field to safeguard present and coming generations of decent work."

Wider Perspective

Several leading oil and gas companies have been condemned for reducing their sustainable spending in the past few years amid a worldwide opposition against environmental measures.

An activist coordinator from an environmental law organization commented: "Ministers promised a people-focused leadership, but that shouldn't involve yielding to corporations making money out of environmental crisis. It's necessary to stop cosying up to climate-damaging entities and put people first."
