McLaren Blames Rival Drivers for Norris-Piastri Incident
A wheel comes loose from the car of Lando Norris after he collided with fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix short race.
McLaren Formula 1 leaders Brown and Andrea Stella blamed competitors for the crash between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.
The Australian driver, ahead of his teammate in the standings by 22 points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after colliding with the Nico Hulkenberg.
The collision forced out both team drivers from the race, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.
Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Crash
Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the driving at the start was "inexperienced", remarking: "Obviously Hulkenberg drove into Oscar and he had no business being where he was."
McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella stated: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we didn't have the chance to race."
"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of expertise fail to act with justful prudence. Go to the initial turn, ensure you don't damage competitors and carry on."
McLaren indicated that the team principal was pointing to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.
Differing Perspectives on the Incident
However, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed the Australian had not demonstrated enough understanding of the risks of the first corner of an F1 race when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.
The Australian had a stronger launch than the Briton and at first challenged on the outer side on the uphill entry to the corner.
But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to hit the Sauber driver.
Driver Reactions After the Incident
The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I haven't seen what occurred, I tried to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. A shame."
Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back things happened and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more drivers behind just being a bit careless and we are the result of that."
The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very fast from the outside changing direction and then I was there in the center."
Hulkenberg, who had qualified a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from yesterday in the bin. Just messy."
"Piastri steered inward pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."
"I had Fernando challenge on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Piastri turned in and the contact was inevitable."
Aftermath and Team Response
The team will analyze the crash with their racers but not until the race weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.
The team principal said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."
"We are in a competitive place from our performance point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to race, race normally and utilize our performance."
"The points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A little more prudence would be good for all involved."
Standings Impact
The race was won by the Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 adrift of the Briton.
The team boss said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we lost eight points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."
The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the championship race by race.
