Adrian Dunbar are set to reprise their roles in the popular police drama

The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
