Storyline Summary
Taking place within the Derry mythology, Welcome to Derry borrows elements from King’s iconic novel while enlarging the world realized by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the two It films. It Chapter One highlighted adolescents confronting terrifying threats, thus it's suitable that the series continues that tradition. Nevertheless, the first installment of HBO’s Welcome to Derry demonstrates it set out to raise the stakes, offering even more intense scares than Muschietti’s films and establishing a dark atmosphere for what's to come.
Premise and Ideas
Set in 1962, the series presents a new generation of grown-ups and kids living in a outwardly charming locale concealing a dark secret. The town follows a brutal, periodic loop—defined by aggression, prejudice, and paranormal events, as a monstrous presence reappears each 27-year cycle. Even though It: Welcome to Derry might seem like it skews too close to the films on the surface, what distinguishes the streaming show is its two-sided viewpoint—unfolding through the eyes of both children and adults concurrently. The kids stay particularly vulnerable to It's terror, but grown-ups also face facing their individual fears arising from local discrimination and hidden paranormal elements.
The series premieres on the 31st of October at 3 a.m. EST.
