Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
Summers commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await observing their progress".
The prominent academic, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The newly public messages showed that the official corresponded with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected the economist's choice to step down.
"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.
Political Context
This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress voted on recently to approve a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will then proceed to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he plans to sign the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his base.
Email Contents
A group of Epstein-related correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced multiple well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.
The messages indicated that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to notable international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, the former official stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he desired "to reestablish confidence and mend connections with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
The professor occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where he was a prominent member, announced that he was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
He became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO the company leader.
