At least 64 Killed in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs

No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 suspects were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major illegal networks.

Government representatives said at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, together with numerous weapons.

Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the city.
